U.S. Passport Processing Times

The total time required to receive a U.S. passport depends on the application type, selected processing speed, document readiness, submission method, shipping, and current Department of State operations. Passport processing does not begin immediately when an order is placed with US Passport Assist. The application must first be prepared, reviewed, completed, and delivered to the appropriate government processing location. The following timeline explains each stage of the process.

1. Select Your Processing Speed

Available processing options depend on your application type, travel date, and other circumstances.

Selecting a faster option may affect:

  • US Passport Assist preparation and review time
  • Government processing speed
  • Shipping and delivery methods
  • Applicable service, government, and shipping fees

Available options and their estimated timelines will be displayed during checkout.

2. Complete Your Application

After placing your order, provide all requested information, documents, and passport photos.

The time required to complete this stage depends partly on how quickly the requested information is provided. Missing, unclear, or inconsistent information may require additional review before the application package can be prepared.

3. Application Preparation and Review

US Passport Assist uses the information you provide to prepare the applicable government form and application package.

During this stage, we may:

  • Review the selected application type
  • Prepare the applicable government form
  • Review the passport photo for visible compliance issues
  • Check the submitted supporting documents
  • Identify missing or inconsistent information
  • Prepare submission and shipping instructions

Once all required information, documents, and photos have been provided and no corrections are needed, US Passport Assist generally completes the preparation and review stage promptly. Customers can help prevent delays by responding quickly to requests and ensuring that all submitted information is complete and accurate.

The preparation timeline may vary depending on the application type, selected service speed, and whether corrections or additional documents are required.

4. Complete Any Required In-Person Step

Some applicants must appear at a passport acceptance facility before the application can be submitted. This generally includes first-time applicants, children, and applicants using Form DS-11.

Appointment availability and the time needed to complete this requirement can affect the overall timeline.

Applicants eligible to use Form DS-82 or DS-5504 generally follow a mail-submission process and do not visit an acceptance facility.

5. Ship the Application Package

After the application is complete, it must be shipped or submitted according to the instructions for that application type.

Delivery time depends on:

  • Shipping carrier
  • Selected delivery service
  • Mailing destination
  • Weekends and holidays
  • Weather or transportation delays

Shipment tracking confirms package movement and delivery, but it does not show the Department of State’s internal application status.

6. Government Processing Begins

Government processing begins after the Department of State receives and accepts the application for review—not when the US Passport Assist order is placed.

The government processing period depends on:

  • Standard or expedited government service
  • Current application volume
  • Application type
  • Completeness of the application
  • Security and eligibility reviews
  • Requests for additional information or documents
  • Department of State operational conditions

The Department of State controls passport processing and makes all final decisions on passport issuance.

7. Track the Application Status

After the application enters government processing, its status may become available through the Department of State’s online passport-status system.

Shipment tracking and government application-status tracking are separate. A package may show as delivered before the government status system displays the application.

8. Passport and Document Delivery

After the passport is issued, the Department of State mails it to the delivery address listed on the application.

The following items may arrive separately:

  • Passport book
  • Passport card
  • Previous passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Naturalization certificate
  • Other original supporting documents

Because these items may be sent in separate mailings, they may not arrive on the same date.

What Can Affect the Total Timeline?

The complete application timeline may be affected by:

  • Application type
  • Selected processing speed
  • Applicant response time
  • Missing or incorrect information
  • Photo or document problems
  • Acceptance-facility appointment availability
  • Shipping time
  • Government workload
  • Requests for additional documents
  • Weekends, holidays, weather, or delivery interruptions
