How to Get a U.S. Passport Step by Step

U.S. passport application requirements vary depending on the applicant’s age, passport history, and individual circumstances. Identifying the correct application type from the beginning helps determine which form, supporting documents, and submission method are required. Below is a general overview of the passport application process.

1. Confirm which application type and form you need

The required form depends on your age, passport history, and reason for applying. Eligible passport renewals generally use Form DS-82 and are submitted by mail. First-time adult passports, child passports, and replacements for lost, stolen, or significantly damaged passports generally require Form DS-11 and an in-person visit. Name changes may require Form DS-82, DS-5504, or DS-11, depending on when the current passport was issued and whether the applicant qualifies for renewal. A second passport may use DS-82 or DS-11 depending on the applicant’s circumstances. Passport-card applicants use the form appropriate to their application situation.

Selecting the correct application type determines the form, supporting documents, and submission method required.

2. Gather the required documents

The documents you need depend on your application type. They may include evidence of U.S. citizenship, acceptable identification, your current or most recent passport, parental consent or relationship documents, proof of a legal name change, or documentation supporting a special passport request.

See the Passport Requirements guide for the complete requirements for each application type.

3. Get a compliant passport photo

Your passport photo must be 2 × 2 inches, taken within the last six months, and have a plain white or off-white background. You must face the camera with a neutral expression or natural smile. Eyeglasses are generally not permitted.

Review the Passport Photo Requirements guide for complete specifications and examples before submitting your photo.

4. Submit your application

Your submission method depends on the required form. Forms DS-82 and DS-5504 are generally submitted by mail with the required passport, photo, supporting documents, and applicable fees. Form DS-11 requires an in-person visit to a passport acceptance facility, where you must sign the application when instructed by an authorized acceptance agent.

Carefully follow the submission instructions provided for your application type, including where to send the package and how to pay the applicable government fees.

5. Track your application and receive your passport

Use your shipment tracking information to confirm that the application package has been delivered. After the Department of State receives and begins processing the application, its status can be checked through the official online passport status system. It may take approximately two weeks for the first status update to appear. Your new passport and supporting documents may arrive separately and on different dates.

The exact requirements and submission process depend on your application type.
